Ancient Egypt and Ostrich Feathers
Have a question for the Egyptologists and knowledgeable fans of Ancient Egypt about ostrich feathers.
(btw is there an Egyptologist Tumblr community? I follow @thatlittleegyptologist but don't know of any other accounts. HMU!)
When I was in Egypt last month I went to the Grand Egyptian Museum to take the very limited tour of the atrium they offer now. It... wasn't worth the money. Anywho, our tour guide did his best to make it seem valuable by talking a LOT about each thing he showed us.
Next to the colossal statue of Ramses II that dominates the atrium there's a table showing the emblems of royal iconography. The sun disk, the nemes headdress, cow horns, and a feather. He asks us if we know what that last one is and I or someone says it's the feather of Ma'at. Correct! Do we know what bird it comes from? The ostrich, someone else says. Why did they choose ostrich feathers for Ma'at and also certain crowns?
On this trip I had gone to the Nubian museum and thus had just seen several pieces of art from pre-historical peoples that utilized ostrich eggs, including a famous one that had three pyramids etched into it along with some animals. So I said something like: The ostrich has been an important animal even before the pharaohs. They relied on it for food and made art with the eggs. The tour guide (Mark) said: That's an awfully materialistic view. No, that's not why.
Now... I know I'm not an expert even though I know a lot about ancient Egypt. But "a materialistic view"? Like somehow it's not enough that ostriches provided food and probably were used in other, important ways? Why do you think Hathor is represented as a cow and there are cow horns incorporated in crowns? Because they look cool? wtf?
Mark then goes on to tell this story. Back in the dawn of civilization in Egypt the Egyptian man didn't have much to do during the day. (eyebrow raise) So he started collecting feathers from all the birds that flew above him in the sky. (...um... wait...) He would collect and then count the barbules and do you know what he discovered? Only the ostrich had the same number of them on both sides. That's why this is the feather of balance and justice.
Friends. I have never wanted to scream SHENANIGANS or at least CITE YOUR SOURCES so much in my life. Like... what?
Leaving aside the implication that ostriches were somehow flying above ancient Egyptians or that there was some point where men didn't have a dang thing to do all day but count the little hairs on feathers, I feel like this explanation is complete hooey. I mean, it could be that all or some of an ostrich's feathers have the same amount of barbules on either side of the middle bit. You might even be able to convince me that this isn't true for any other bird that someone from the Nile valley 6,000+ years ago had access to. But I'm going to need a ton of supporting evidence that this is the sole reason why the feather of Ma'at is an ostrich feather and not for the "materialistic" reasons I cited.
Also, I'm sorry, but I'm real sure predynastic Nile valley dwellers were far more concerned about food and shelter than coming up with complex reasons for using a certain kind of feather to represent a metaphysical thing.
However, I could be wrong! So I'm asking: is there evidence for Mark's version of events? Is this, you know, written somewhere in a papyrus or on a temple wall or another place? I would honestly love to read any papers on this subject, whatever the background on it.
As to the Grand Egyptian Museum, I really hope that whoever they hire to give tours when the whole thing opens are better at this than Mark. I wasn't impressed with his tour overall and eventually gave up listening to him once I saw that there was a gelato place open for business inside.

My Egypt Luxury Tour
My Egypt luxury tour package from Canada really outdid my expectations! From the time of my arrival in Cairo, everything worked in tune: private transfers, 5-star hotels, and expert guides made the tour smooth and enlightening.
The highlight was the Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan, Each stop from Luxor starting with the Karnak Temple to the end in Abu Simbel was magical with highly trained Egyptologists who made each site come alive with history. Early access to some of these sites made the experience just that bit special. Further visits to Alexandria and Old Cairo added a great contrast to the journey. Visiting the Citadel and Khan el-Khalili was quite interesting, and throughout the tour, it was not a bother to bother with logistics at all-everything was perfectly arranged. I highly recommend this Egypt luxury travel and culture, these memories will always be treasured.

The Great Pyramids of Giza
The great Pyramids of Giza are the most famous monuments of ancient Egypt. These massive stone structures were built around 4500 years ago on a rocky desert plateau close to the Nile. But the intriguing Egyptian pyramids were more than just tombs for kings. The mysteries surrounding pyramids’ symbolism, design and purpose have inspired passionate debate. It is likely that many of these mysteries will never be solved. You will visit the three famous Pyramids; Pyramid of Cheops, Khafre and Menkaure, You could even get inside the pyramids (at additional cost).

There was this older Egyptian guy I was on a first date with, and we were talking about our respective jobs. I mentioned that I work in a museum and that I was studying Egyptology. He proceeded to tell me, in excruciating detail, why he thought I didn't have enough schooling to be an Egyptologist. The job he described was a fucking TOUR GUIDE. Not only the wrong job, but also the wrong industry.
what's the most confidently and wrongly a grown adult has ever argued with you - I'll start.
at a work dinner - for scientists - a woman there was convinced that all of sign language was just spelling out words letter-by-letter. she was saying that what we consider sign language is just people spelling out full English words, and she said "it's amazing because it's the only universally-understood language." cue silence from the table.
she fully believed that deaf people in China were spelling out English words letter by letter in ASL to communicate, and that distinct words did not exist. we kept trying to correct her. she replied that it's one of her special interests and she's done extensive research on the subject.

February 25 2024 Cairo and Giza, Egypt
Tumblr media
Yesterday we flew to Cairo to begin our tour of Egypt. We're staying at the Nile Ritz-Carlton and it's a very nice hotel. This morning we reunited with our friends Carolyn, Jim, and their son Alexi from Boulder. Carolyn and Jim had been in Saudi Arabia visiting a friend from Boulder who is working there and Alexi came from Colombia, where he lives most of the time.
Tumblr media
Carolyn had arranged for an Egyptian guide, whose name is Ayman, to take us to Giza to visit the pyramids. Ayman is Muslim and really an archeologist who guides tours to make a living. He was kind, funny, and, of course, very knowledgeable about Egyptian history.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was an AWESOME experience! We went to the Great Pyramid first but we could also see so many of the other pyramids in the distance. We actually walked inside the Great Pyramid to about a third of the way up. It was narrow and dark and there were a lot of people so it was a bit claustrophobic and we were glad when we reached the room where we could stand up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you know me well you know I love animals and I'm an animal rights activist. While seeing these camels was thrilling, I felt bad for them because I know their lives are hard and not very long. As long as they are strong enough to work and take people on lives they are fed well but when they get sick, injured, or old, they are sold off in the camel markets for meat. Yes, people actually eat camels. Sad as it is, it's not much different than people eating cows and it seems that their taste buds motivate most people's food choices, not their compassion for animals, so I'm, as usual, in the minority.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Carolyn, Alexi, and Jim got here before us, a few days ago, and they rode camels. I have ridden camels in Morocco. It's not that comfortable a ride but it's exciting and at least it keeps them alive and out of the camel markets.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next we went to see the Great Sphinx, which is near the Great Pyramid. Each pyramid has a sphinx as a symbolic protector, deterring evil spirits and representing royal authority. That may have worked during the time of the pharaohs, but it certainly didn't scare away looters, which is why more modern dynasties chose to create the tombs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On our way to see more pyramids, Ayman took us to a perfume shop for tea and to try out the different scents, which was a lot of fun. This was all to encourage us to buy some souvenirs, which, of course, we did.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The perfume bottle were all so beautiful that I wanted to buy the lot, but getting them back home without breakage would have been a problem so I only bought a few small ones.
Tumblr media
I chose this little elephant bottle and had it packed well, hoping it would survive the rest of the journey. I also bought some perfumes to use and give as gifts. We were all hungry but we didn't have time to go to a restaurant before our next stop, so Ayman sent someone to buy us pita sandwiches, which we ate in the van. They were yummy!
Tumblr media
Our next stop was Badrashin, where we visited some tombs to see hieroglyphics. Being an archeologist and Egyptologist, Ayman is quite well versed in reading them and he deciphered quite a few for us. They were FASCINATING!
Tumblr media
We entered the tomb of Kagemni, a chief justice and vizier, to see the hieroglyphics inside and we were blown away with the detail after so many centuries and millennia.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hieroglyphics are stories of the gods, the pharaohs, and other important people. Being able to read hieroglyphics means you can become a great storyteller now, but in the time of the pharaohs, it was actually their religion.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next we went to see the oldest pyramid and it was, as you might imagine, less impressive than the Great Pyramid. What I found impressive was the entryway filled with beautiful columns leading to the pyramid.
Tumblr media
Our hotel grounds were beautiful lit up at night. After we got back from the tour, rested and showered, we had dinner at the hotel's restaurant with Carolyn, Jim, and Alexi and chatted about the day's events. Then we called it an early night because we knew tomorrow's tour would probably be just as interesting and we wanted to have enough sleep to keep up the pace.

The Standard Nile Cruise: A Timeless Journey Through Egypt’s History
The Nile River, often referred to as the “lifeblood” of Egypt, has been an essential part of the country’s history and culture for millennia. It is no surprise that one of the best ways to explore the rich heritage and grandeur of Egypt is by embarking on a Nile Cruise. Among the various options available, the “Standard Nile Cruise” offers an affordable yet immersive way for travelers to experience the iconic sights along this majestic river.
What is a Standard Nile Cruise?
A Standard Nile Cruise is typically a mid-range cruise package that allows tourists to explore Egypt’s ancient treasures while enjoying the comforts of a cruise ship. These cruises generally operate between two of Egypt’s most famous cities, Luxor and Aswan, providing access to historical landmarks such as the Valley of the Kings, Karnak Temple, the Temple of Philae, and the Temple of Kom Ombo, among others.
Standard Nile Cruises are generally on smaller or moderately luxurious vessels compared to the more upscale options, but they offer excellent value for money. Passengers can expect good accommodations, fine dining, and guided tours that delve into the history and mythology of Egypt.
Onboard Experience
While the focus of a Standard Nile Cruise is often on the exploration of Egypt’s cultural treasures, the onboard experience is also an integral part of the journey.
Cabins: Cabins on a Standard Nile Cruise are comfortable, offering air-conditioning, private bathrooms, and modern amenities. The rooms are often decorated in a traditional Egyptian style, providing a cozy retreat after a day of sightseeing.
Dining: Most Standard Nile Cruises feature buffet-style or à la carte dining options, serving a mix of Egyptian and international cuisine. Guests can expect to enjoy dishes like grilled meats, freshly baked bread, rice, and an assortment of traditional Egyptian dishes such as “koshari” and “molokhia.”
Entertainment: In the evenings, passengers can unwind with various entertainment options such as traditional Egyptian folk music and dance performances, including the famous “Tanoura” dance. Some cruises may also host themed nights to enrich the cultural experience.
Excursions: The guided excursions are an integral part of the experience. Knowledgeable Egyptologists accompany passengers to each historical site, offering deep insights into the monuments, temples, and tombs. Some cruises also include optional excursions like hot-air balloon rides over Luxor or visits to local Nubian villages.
Why Choose a Standard Nile Cruise?
Value for Money: A Standard Nile Cruise offers an ideal balance of cost and comfort. While not as luxurious as the premium cruises, it still provides high-quality service, well-maintained cabins, and expert-guided tours, making it a great choice for those on a budget.
Rich History and Culture: Egypt is a land steeped in history, and a cruise along the Nile River allows you to see some of the most important sites from ancient Egyptian civilization. With guided tours, you’ll have a deeper understanding of the culture and the legends that have shaped the country for thousands of years.
Convenience: The all-inclusive nature of the cruise makes it easy to see Egypt’s iconic sites without the hassle of transportation logistics. Instead of worrying about traveling between sites, the cruise takes care of the details, providing an organized and stress-free experience.
Relaxation and Comfort: A Nile Cruise offers an opportunity to relax and enjoy the serene beauty of the Nile River while still being surrounded by Egypt’s history. Passengers can spend the day exploring temples, then unwind on the deck, enjoying stunning views of the river and desert landscapes.
Conclusion
A Standard Nile Cruise is an exceptional way to experience the wonders of Egypt while enjoying the comfort of a cruise. Offering a rich mix of history, culture, and relaxation, it provides travelers with an unforgettable journey through one of the world’s oldest civilizations. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a lover of ancient architecture, or simply someone looking to experience the beauty of the Nile River, a Standard Nile Cruise is an experience that will stay with you long after the journey ends.
